Georgia First Lady Inspires Support for Foster Children

In support of the First Lady's Our Children Campaign, Family Connection Partnership recently hosted its second series of Child Abuse and Neglect Learning Institutes at several sites across the state. Georgia First Lady Mary Perdue was a featured speaker during two sessions of the Institute entitled "How Communities Can Support Foster Children and Families."

"The goal of the Our Children Campaign is now beyond raising awareness," Mrs. Perdue said. "I want to inspire people to action. Yes, the system needs improvement but when more people know what's happening with a child in foster care, people get more involved in helping that child become a productive adult."

The Institute included discussions on:

  • How child abuse affects children
  • How communities can support abused/neglected children
  • How communities can support foster parents

"Prevention is a huge piece of the puzzle," Mrs. Perdue said. "We need more mentoring, parenting classes, and pairing nurturing families with families in crisis. I would like us to do everything possible to ensure that our children grow up to become responsible, productive adults."

The event was supported by several partners, including The Division of Family and Children Services, the Children's Trust Fund of Georgia, the Office of the Child Advocate, and the Jim Casey Foundation.
