KIDS COUNT Essay and Data Illustrate Challenges for Helping Youth

The Annie E. Casey Foundation has released its annual KIDS COUNT Data Book, which provides a state-by-state statistical portrait on the educational, health and economic conditions of American children. Casey has also released a KIDS COUNT Essay, which focuses on the increasing number of "disconnected" youth without degrees or employment who face a difficult transition to adulthood.

According to Casey, "disconnected" youth are made up of teens in foster care, youth in the juvenile justice system, teens who are already parents themselves, and young people who did not finish high school.

The KIDS COUNT project examines the issues surrounding this group of at-risk young adults — who they are, why it is critical that they are helped, and what they need to succeed.
