Every kid needs a good pair of sneakers for school. But not every parent can afford to buy them at such outrageous prices. An Atlanta area shoe store has teamed up with a local school system to offer parents affordable, quality sneakers for their kids at wholesale prices. The result is two-fold: kids in DeKalb County who might not otherwise have a good pair of sneakers for school are coming to school more prepared for their daily activities; and DeKalb County schools receive a small contribution toward their fundraising efforts in the process. Alfonzo Stevens, owner of $19.95 Quality Sneakers, says it's his way of improving economic development efforts in the Atlanta metro area. "We work with community organizations to help create fundraising opportunities for them," Stevens says. "Anyone can come in and buy a pair of sneakers for $19.95, mention a community organization that they want to benefit from the sale, and that organization gets a $5.00 contribution from that sale. In essence, the customer has paid $14.95 for a pair of shoes and made a small $5.00 contribution to his community." So far, the store's two locations have contributed hundreds of dollars to the community through this sales effort. Stevens says he plans to expand to other locations in the Atlanta metro area.
