Collaboratives Receive Funding for Implementing Volunteer Programs

Gov. Sonny Perdue awarded $100,000 in state challenge grants to 13 Georgia communities the Georgia Summit on Volunteerism in October, hosted by Hands On Georgia. The local groups representing the communities that received the Hands on Georgia grants, ranging from $2,500 to $10,000, are committed to implementing community-based volunteer recruitment and management programs. Three of those communities are Family Connection collaboratives.

Dodge Community Connection and Cook County Commission for Children and Youth each received $2,500, and Eatonton-Putnam Family Connection received $3,500.

"Government services cannot take the place of a caring community," said Gov. Sonny Perdue. "These challenge grants and the matching local funds will help these communities harness and cultivate the volunteer effort that exists in Georgia." Each community must match the grant award with equal local funds.

Hands On Georgia is a statewide network that supports innovative volunteer approaches to meeting Georgia's critical needs through service and civic engagement. The network calls upon the citizens of Georgia to help tackle tough issues in the state through volunteer service and engaged citizenship.

This was the first round of grant awards for Fiscal Year 2007. A second round of $100,000 in funding will be awarded in March 2007.
