Siemens Healthcare Donates MRI to
Tornado-Torn Sumter Regional Hospital

Demolition commences on Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus so the community can rebuild the facility, which fell vicitm to a tornado last year. Visions for Sumter Executive Board member Dianne Hall won the lottery to make the first hit on the hospital.

In recognition of Sumter Regional Hospital's struggle to rebuild following a devastating tornado in March 2007, Siemens Healthcare will donate a new $800,000 MAGNETOM ESSENZA MRI to the Americus, Ga. facility.

"On behalf of Sumter Regional, Americus and Sumter County, and our entire 10-county coverage area, we thank each of you who supported us during this contest," said Angela Westra, Family Connection coordinator for Visions for Sumter: Seeing Through Young Eyes, Inc. "Because of your support and commitment to our entry, Siemens took notice of Sumter's story and will deliver the machine once the hospital gets back on its feet and has the facility to support it. Our mission was to get an MRI machine for our community, and with your support we met that objective."

The devastating effect of last spring's tornado on Sumter and the community it serves struck a chord with Siemens, one of the world's largest suppliers to the health-care industry. Siemens, in solidarity with those at Sumter, is looking forward to the day when the re-built facility is able to support health-care equipment such as the Siemens MAGNETOM ESSENZA.

"From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Siemens for generously contributing a MAGNETOM ESSENZA to our rebuilding efforts," said David Seagraves, president and CEO of Sumter Regional Hospital (pictured left). "Piece by piece, we are rebuilding and, soon, we will have the ability to address the health-care needs of our community even better than before."

The MAGNETOM ESSENZA, which was introduced to the market in October 2007 and developed specifically for the small hospital market, is expected to help physicians deliver improved imaging services in neurology, orthopedics, body imaging, angiography, cardiology, breast imaging, oncology, and pediatric imaging. The lowest-cost new system available today, the MAGNETOM ESSENZA boasts 1.5-Tesla magnet strength. It generates high-resolution images that will help clinicians make a more precise diagnosis and could eliminate the need for expensive and time-consuming follow-up exams.

"The spirit of community and collaboration was never more evident as in the days following the March 1 tornado that ravaged Sumter County last year," said Westra. "It was the same spirit that rallied together for the opportunity to win an MRI for our hospital, which sustained a direct hit from the tornado. Though the hospital infrastructure itself was a total loss, the indestructible spirit of Sumter County has proven that community is alive and well here in our small rural area. The tornado, while tragic, has unified us all and given hope for a new and better tomorrow."
