While
Family Connection assists communities in addressing the serious
challenges facing Georgia's children and families, in this Summer
issue of Connected, we show you how we're guiding the youth
in this state to take an active role in facing those challenges.
Read
how partnerships with Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer
Sciences are providing financial and nutritional literacy opportunities
for parents and youth, empowering them to contribute to their ownand
their communities'well-being, in a match that could only be
made in Georgia. And speaking of partners, the Latin American Association's
story confirms that when it comes to the well-being of children,
we speak the same language.
We'll
visit the Edgewood community in the southeast section of Atlanta,
known for its crime and poverty, where families and the community
are working together to make a new name for themselves by ensuring
that all children in this one-square-mile area have what they need
to succeed in school.
You
will read how one woman, by opening her home and her kitchen to
students taking the high-school completion test, has discovered
that the way to students' minds is through their stomachsand
hearts. In another story we'll
take you to Latin Leadership Day, where graduation coaches and ESOL
teachers worked with 10th- and 11th-grade students to improve their
high school completion rate.
Our
Summer edition also takes you to the Blue Ridge Mountains where
one collaborative literally cemented Family Connection into the
community. We also visit collaboratives in South Georgia who recently
endured three months of wildfires.
Be
sure to read the Family Connection Conference 2007 news for the
latest updates on our 9th biennial conference in October. And if
you'd like a preview, watch the video interview with Randy Haveson, the
closing session keynote.
As
I wrote in the Spring issue, this is a tool for you to share best
practices with one another, to call for help from a county that
may be excelling where you are having your greatest challenges,
and to educate and encourage our partners and policymakers to make
informed decisions and take clear actions that will benefit families
and communities in this state.
We
hope you enjoy reading and sharing this, and I hope you will find
time this summer to relax, re-energize, and spend time with your
family and friends.
Sincerely,
Gaye
