'KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION' TV Program Gaining More Viewers and Guests

On the set of "KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION," Angela Westra (left) chats with guests Marcus Johnson and Karen Smith of Sumter Regional Hospital.

"KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION," is a bi-weekly program that spotlights the faculty, staff, students and achievements of the Sumter County Public School System. The show has steadily increased in popularity since it first aired five years ago, and more guests from the area are coming into the studio partly due to Angela Westra of Visions for Sumter.

At the beginning of the school year potential guests filled in only two days of the program schedule until Westra took seven of the available dates. After contacting members of the Sumter County Collaborative, she began inviting other guests to share timely information about the spirit and progress of Americus and Sumter County. But her work isn't only behind the scene. Westra also hosts these shows.

"Since I communicate regularly and work closely with members of our collaborative, it's easy to approach these leaders and ask that they fill one or more of the three segments on the hour-long show," said Westra. "I want to share the good news about these organizations that are so vital to adults and students in Sumter County. Questions for these guests come easy to me since I know they're ready with quick responses about their programs."

During a recent taping of "KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION," Westra interviewed Marcus Johnson of Sumter Regional Hospital 's Public Relations Department, and Karen Smith, community educator for the hospital, which is still recovering from a tornado that slammed into it in March. During the 18-minute segment, the guests discussed a video the hospital produced about the disaster in an effort to win a Siemans MRI machine and the ongoing need to vote online for Sumter Regional Hospital's video. The facility with the top number of votes at the end of December will win the MRI machine. Johnson and Smith also discussed community involvement, as well as current and future programs for public education.

During the second segment, Westra talked with Mary Ann Crowley, executive director of New Horizons Habitat for Humanity, about ongoing progress and future plans for the home-building organization. They also discussed how the mobility factor affects student achievement. The third segment of the program was with Alesia Snipes-Sanders, vice president of the Sumter Area Ministerial Association (SAMA) and director of the Calvary Episcopal/SAMA Food Pantry.

"KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION," produced by Mulkey McMichael, director of Public Relations and Information for Sumter County Schools, and Bob Slenker, video production specialist with Georgia Southwestern State University, airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon, 4 and 8 p.m. on Channel 16, GSW TV. Plans are underway to increase viewing through association with area cable companies.
