Finding Your Way Around the State Capitol

Transportation and Parking

There is a MARTA station at Georgia State/Sloppy Floyd Building. For schedule and route information, call 404-848-4711 or Customer Service at 404-848-4800. Parking is available at a state-owned lot on Butler Street (behind Sloppy Floyd) or at Underground Atlanta.

Food, Phone, and Restrooms

There is a cafeteria located in the bottom of the Twin Towers/Sloppy Floyd Building. It has multiple serving lines and is open for breakfast and lunch. There is a small snack bar in the basement of the Capitol. There are many restaurants in Underground Atlanta, a short distance from the Capitol.

Public phones are on the third and first floor outside the restroom. If you are at the Capitol frequently, a cell phone is advisable due to the difficulty in accessing a phone.

Restrooms are on the first and third floor of the Capitol (the first floor is below ground level). There are coat/umbrella racks throughout the Capitol.

Schedule

Both houses usually convene at 10 a.m. Committee meetings are held in the morning and the afternoon. Schedules are posted on bulletin boards outside the offices of the Secretary of the Senate and on the wall near the staircase outside the House Clerk's office. Committee chairs sometimes post meeting notices outside their office; also check with the Committee Secretary for time and locations of meetings.

You can call the Legislative Counsel office at 404-656-5000 and ask to be placed on their mailing list to receive a weekly schedule of meetings. If you are monitoring a specific committee or an active issue, the best strategy is to check with the committee secretary on a daily basis.

Finding Information

To find out who your local legislator is, call your local voter registrar (listed under county government) or go to www.legis.state.ga.us. A book with information about legislators (commonly called the picture book) is published annually and available through the Senate Information office (404-656-0028) or House Information (404-656-5082). The book has local and Atlanta phone numbers and other information about legislators.

Legislators have offices at the Capitol or at the Legislative Office Building across the street at the Capitol. The picture book has office numbers and phone numbers.

Composites (a list of all bills and status of bills), first readers (bills introduced daily), and daily calendars (committee meetings and bills to be considered) can be picked up at the Secretary of the Senate or the House Clerk's office. You can also request copies of bills at each office. You will need to know the number of the bill and fill out a form. One copy is free.

GeorgiaNet has information available online at www.ganet.org; daily calendars, budget updates, general information, information on legislators, and bill status are among the services available online. You also can access a live audio feed on GeorgiaNet.

If you know a bill number, you can call the Clerk of the House at 404-656-5015 or the Secretary of the Senate at 404-656-5040 to check the vote on a specific bill.
