Special Initiatives
Grade-Level Reading Initiative
Georgia’s children are falling below—or barely meeting—the basic standard in reading by the end of third grade. Children who don’t learn to read by this milestone can’t read to learn in the fourth grade and beyond. The few strides we’ve made in Georgia to improve grade-level reading proficiency are ineffective because we’re not reaching every child and we’re not executing what we know we need to do.
We at GaFCP are working together with state leaders and local stakeholders in an unprecedented 10-year collaborative initiative to close the literacy gap and raise the bar for academic success for all children in Georgia.

Low-Birthweight Initiative
The rate of low-birthweight infants born in the United States has reached its highest level in 30 years. The rate in Georgia is among the highest in the nation at 9.6 percent.
We at GaFCP, the Promising Practices Network, and RAND Corporation are alarmed about the increasing percentage of babies born at low birthweight. We are engaged in a collaborative initiative to increase awareness of low-birthweight trends and current promising practices prevention efforts.

Community Partnerships for Protecting Children Initiative
Community Partnerships for Protecting Children (CPPC) is a community driven approach to child safety in which communities are reclaiming their responsibility to keep children safe from abuse and neglect. The core principle and belief reflected in CPPC communities is that one agency alone can never ensure that children are not maltreated; the diligence of the entire community is required.
We at GaFCP and Department of Family and Children services are working together with state leaders and local stakeholders engaging local resources to ensure that every child will be safe from abuse and neglect and will become a healthy, literate and economically self-sustaining adult.
